Hazardous areas and Ex. zones
Hazardous areas are places where an explosive atmosphere can form under certain conditions. An explosive atmosphere consists of a mixture of air and gases, vapours, smoke and combustible dusts, in which a fire spreads rapidly (explosion) after ignition at normal air pressure. The user is responsible for classifying hazardous areas in accordance with European Directive 1999/92/CE. The international standards IEC 61241-10 provide the criteria for the classification of hazardous areas on the basis of the chemical nature, physical properties and quantity of the substances used and a function of the frequency and duration in which an explosive mixture can form.
Zones with gas deposits
If the hazard is due to the presence of gases, vapours or mists of flammable substances, European Directive 1999/92/CE provides for classification in the following three zones:
Zone 0
Areas in which an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods of time. In this area, the installation of power devices with double protection is intended.
Zone 1
Areas in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to form. Explosion-proof electric motors or those with increased safety conditions (with the restrictions specified by the standards for the latter) may be installed in this zone.
Zone 2
Areas in which an explosive atmosphere can only form very rarely and for a short time. In addition to motors with explosion protection or increased safety devices, spark-proof motors may also be installed in this zone.
Zones with combustible dust formation
If the hazard is caused by the presence of flammable, combustible dust, the European Directive 1999/92/CE provides for classification into zones.
Zone 20
Areas in which an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods of time. In this zone, electric motors with a type certificate in accordance with the ATEX directive and with degree of protection IP6x may be installed.
Zone 22
Areas in which an explosive atmosphere can only form very rarely and for short periods of time. In the presence of conductive dust, electric motors with a type certificate in accordance with the ATEX directive and with degree of protection IP6x may be installed in this area. If non-conductive dust is present, motors with protection class IP5x and a manufacturer's declaration of conformity may be installed in addition to motors with protection class IP6x.
