Components of a DC motor

A DC motor is used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, which is used to perform mechanical work. This generates a rotary movement that is used to drive devices and systems. The principle used is that a force acts on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field. The main components of a DC motor are the field magnet (stator), the rotating armature (rotor), the collector and the carbon brushes.

Function of a DC motor

A magnetic field is created by the field magnet (permanent magnet or electromagnet). An electromagnet is rotatably mounted in this field - the armature. The armature is connected to a power source via carbon brushes as sliding contacts. The current flow in the armature causes it to become magnetic, creating forces between the field magnets and the armature. Like magnetic poles repel each other, unlike magnetic poles attract each other. These repulsive and attractive forces between the magnetic poles cause the armature to rotate.
